6.4.8 Total Number of Licensed Physicians (MDs & DOs) and Rate per 1,000 Residents
Why is this important?
The number of licensed physicians per 1,000 people is one measure of healthcare access. The rate helps to determine whether the number of practicing physicians is sufficient, given the size of the population needing care. Of particular importance are primary care providers. Availability of primary care providers in low-income and rural communities is a critical condition to assuring access to primary and preventive care.
Ideally, this indicator would include other professionals who are central to health care access, such as nurses and physician’s assistants. However, this data is not currently available.
This indicator measures the total number and the rate per 1,000 residents of practicing physicians who actually have a local address in Benton and Franklin Counties combined County. This includes both physicians who have an MD (Medical Doctor) degree as well as those who have a DO degree (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). Washington State is offered as a benchmark. Additional information can be found in the “Download Data” section.
