The city of Richland has begun the first rehabilitation project of Stevens Drive in 20 years, and it will reduce lanes to one in each direction and other potential traffic disruptions through September.
Another central Richland thoroughfare is going to be congested over the coming months as it undergoes its first major overhaul in decades.
Crews started a rehabilitation project of Stevens Drive between Lee and Swift boulevards on March 17, according to a release from the city of Richland. The stretch of road hasn’t undergone such extensive improvements in 20 years.
The project extends from Lee Boulevard through the Swift Avenue intersection, and along Mansfield Street between Stevens Drive and Columbia Playfields.
The rehabilitation of Stevens Drive between Lee and Swift boulevards also includes work at two intersections and on Mansfield to improve curb, gutter and sidewalks and also install bike lanes.
Traffic on Stevens Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction through September. Commuters are encouraged to consider an alternative route. Business access within the work zone will be maintained with occasional disruptions.
Along with road repairs, the project will include bump-outs and new ADA-compliant ramps at the Knight Street and Mansfield Street intersections. Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon crossings and bike lanes will also be added, while preserving on-street parking.
Workers also will install curb, gutter and 8-foot sidewalks along Mansfield from Stevens Drive to the Columbia Playfields. On-street parking will be available on both sides of Mansfield Street once the project is finished.
