Brief background about Senior Benefits Solutions and services it offers:
Between my business partner, Urszula Kobiesa and I, we have over 30 years combined experience with Medicare. We joined forces in August of 2010 and opened Senior Benefit Solutions in Kennewick. We offer specialized local assistance to all Medicare beneficiaries. Whether they are just turning 65, working past 65 or needing to review their current coverage, we can provide comprehensive health care solutions for their Medicare coverage needs.
How did you land your current role? How long have you been in it?
I started in the Medicare industry back in 1998 with Secure Horizons/United Healthcare. After moving to the Tri-Cities back in 2005, I found myself working at a captive agency. I found this to be very limited and decided that it was time to open an independent agency that was able to offer Medicare beneficiaries a choice. I was fortunate enough to meet my current business partner, and we teamed up to open Senior Benefit Solutions.
What do you wish people in your community knew about Senior Benefit Solutions?
At Senior Benefit Solutions we pride ourselves on the service we provide to our community. Because we have a local office, we are able to help our clients and their families sort out complicated situations and provide top-notch customer service. Along with my business partner, Urszula, and our team of agents, we take a consultative approach to helping you with your Medicare coverage and strive to provide you with a positive experience when transitioning to Medicare. We are able to assist Medicare beneficiaries throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Arizona. We are very passionate about what we do. We are often asked if there is a fee for our services. There are no added fees for our services.
What advice do you find yourself repeating to recent retirees?
Plan ahead! Take the time to gain knowledge and understanding to make a solid decision about your Medicare health plan coverage. Call Senior Benefits Solutions to schedule an appointment at least three months in advance of when you are needing coverage. Whether you are just turning 65 or working past 65, it is important to gather information, know what enrollment deadlines apply to you and what is involved in the application process. It is important to start educating yourself on Medicare plans that are available to you and evaluate your options based on medical needs, medications and budget.
When should people start thinking about their retirement benefits? How far out from retirement?
Medicare, health benefits and enrollment involve many factors. It really depends on your situation:
Each situation has specific criteria and enrollment periods to apply.
What is one characteristic that believes every leader should possess?
Integrity and the ability to manage your own emotions and keep yourself in check when dealing with your emotions and those of team members. A culture of empathy and understanding goes a long way to build trust and inspire those who work for you.
What is the biggest challenge facing business managers today?
In our industry, staying updated with technology, regulations and compliance is one of the significant challenges we encounter. The Medicare arena is ever evolving, requiring yearly training and certification. Staying on top of the changes, rules and regulations is imperative and mandated to remain in a sales position.
If you had a magic wand, what would you change about your industry?
More regulations on telemarketers. They should be banned from contacting Medicare beneficiaries all together. I have been in this business since 1998 and the situation with telemarketers harassing Medicare beneficiaries is out of control. We have horror stories of older folks being switched without their knowledge.
What advice would you give for someone going into a leadership position for the first time?
Lead by example and the tenets of firm and fair.
Who are your role models or mentors and why?
That is an easy one for me. My manager way back at Secure Horizons was the gold standard. She led by example, was very fair, firm and always had our back. She was always very straightforward, and you knew where you stood. She had the best laugh ever!
How do you keep your employees (or team members) motivated?
All our agents are independent. We provide them with guidance, education and a place for them to meet with their clients. When you are independent, you must be self-motivated or you will fail.
How did you decide to pursue the career that you are working in today?
Previously, I was responsible for managing a large travel agency. A client who worked for Secure Horizons/United Healthcare encouraged me to apply for her position when she was being promoted. I applied, interviewed and was hired. After a few years, the entire sales team was laid off. I continued to explore other opportunities within the insurance industry, which led me to my current position.
How do you measure success in your workplace?
Referrals from satisfied clients and expanding business.
What do you consider your leadership style to be?
Being that all our agents are their own bosses, we look at ourselves as roles models and leaders. We lead by example by our hard work and the success that has come with that. Networking brings referrals, which brings organic growth.
How do you balance work and family life?
I need to do better at this. When you no longer have kids at home, and you own your own business, there often is no balance. Intentionality is key to being balanced and being mindful of how I spend my time. Working on this.
What do you like to do when you are not at work?
By far, spending time with our two granddaughters. We also like to head west to the ocean and east to the mountains of Montana. Love a good book and enjoying the outdoors here in the Tri-Cities as well.
What is the best time management strategy?
I am committed to my calendar and staying on task.
Best tip to relieve stress?
Down time with a good book.
What is your favorite podcast? Most used app? Or favorite website?
I have no real favorites. I am on my computer all day long. So again, when I have free time, I like to read.
Do you have a personal mantra, phrase, or quote you like to use?
I have many…
Carpe diem.
Cream rises to the top.
To those who have been given much, much is expected.
This too shall pass.
Challenges are opportunities.
