Two executive directors of nonprofits — one to support refugees and immigrants, and the other kids — received Kennewick’s highest honors.

"I know what it’s like, what the families are going through. (Helping them get the grant) is something that I’m very proud I was able to accomplish."

The mission’s existing shelter for women and children is on North Second Avenue in Pasco. It’s in a building that’s more than 100 years old, with aging electrical, plumbing and heating systems.

The 3 Rivers Community Foundation distributed the grants to several nonprofits Nov. 30 during its Celebration of Philanthropy event at the Red Lion Columbia Center in Kennewick. 

The effort to build a new women and children’s shelter in the Tri-Cities got a big boost from a memorial fund honoring a Bechtel senior vice president who died earlier this year.
